Trump's Regime of Consequences and Incentives

Donald Trump's intense appetite for revenge has rapidly morphed into a methodical framework. Over the twelve months, the leader's rage and impulses have adopted the form of government actions in ways analogous to past repressive governments. Federal figures who fail to comply are immediately dismissed and substituted by supporters. Political figures who confront him risk indictment, trial and sanctions. Adversaries have been categorized under presidential orders as “unpatriotic”, “anti-Christian” and “opposing economic freedom”, and threatened with legal action as “extremists”.

Federal Agencies Remade

All case involving targeting of critics and protection for supporters displays its own unique qualities. But, regardless of their particular form, they represent manifestations of what has emerged as a deliberate technique. Such events are not coincidental. Trump's cleansing of Department of Justice attorneys and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, coupled with his installation of supporters in high-level roles, began rapidly, promptly took on a regularity, and has now been molded into a system. Federal prosecutors and the Federal Bureau have been restructured into partisan organizations under Trump's direct direction to carry out his directives. Injustice has been turned into routine. It represents the retribution system.

Leadership is preoccupied with targeting the chief's supposed opponents than they are with protecting our country's safety.

Within the Apparatus

The beginnings of this mechanism has been revealed in the court filing of several ex- top law enforcement officials filed in late summer in the judicial system in the capital against FBI director a senior appointee and justice department head Pam Bondi for wrongful dismissal in “a campaign of retribution against them for what administration figures judged to be a refusal to show proper allegiance”. According to the filing that Brian Driscoll, the previous temporary head, details a discussion in which Patel “freely confessed the impropriety of his actions”.

The official had tried to shield law enforcement officers from being terminated, the filing claims. He advised him that “they” – interpreted by the official to be the presidential administration and DoJ – had directed him to dismiss anyone who they identified as having been involved in a legal probe against Trump. The document adds: “He stated that he had to terminate the individuals his superiors told him to dismiss, because his ability to keep his own position relied on the dismissal of the officials who were involved in matters involving the chief executive. Patel explained that there was nothing he or the official could do to prevent these or any other dismissals, because ‘the bureau tried to place the leader in detention and he hasn't forgotten it.’” Once he informed Patel he was disregarding the bureau's own regulations, the director supposedly said “he understood that and he knew the character of the summary firings were probably illegal”.

Broad Impact

After Patel's claimed confession to the official, the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau have been weakened and repurposed for Trump's retribution system. Several of the agency's top officials were fired or pushed out in the initial period of the administration. About numerous lawyers at the justice department have agreed to a “voluntary departure plan”. No fewer than multiple DoJ lawyers, among them those in the Manhattan division, stepped down in dissent over what they viewed as partisan influence in withdrawing the corruption case against the local official, the mayor, in exchange for his cooperation with the administration's federal agency detentions of migrants. The ethics division of the department, which manages misconduct investigations, has been diminished to two attorneys. The equality section has been decimated: seventy percent of its staff has departed. One-third of senior leaders at DoJ have resigned. The division upholding conservation statutes has seen departures of 50% its leadership.

Favors and Punishments

Regarding the Adams case, the temporary lawyer for the federal division, the official, resigned in protest against what she characterized as the “exchange”. A key figure, his “immigration leader,” was present as the implementer with him on television to declare: “Unless he complies, I'll reappear in the city.”. Additionally, another figure, previously the acting deputy attorney general and a past legal representative, who arranged the agreement, was given an appellate federal judgeship, a potential springboard to the judicial branch.

Trump's protection for offenses carried out while in government, provided by the unprecedented ruling of the GOP-led on the judicial body, thus thwarting his criminal case over the political violence and preserving his electoral prospects for the national vote, is the cornerstone on which he relies to protect his loyalists. Under these circumstances, he has been empowered to authorize misconduct. The consequence of the supreme court decision saturates his presidency and the Republican Party down to its bones. The court matter has spread. As Richard Nixon's legal adviser John Dean said about the Watergate
