A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying such drugs should be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
