England along with Welsh Drawn in the Same Group for RWC 2027 Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in an identical pool for the 2027 RWC, promising a highly-anticipated early encounter in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing echoes their famous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Draws

Ireland and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland secured a convincing victory, with Scotland unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in France, complete that same group.

Notably, the victors of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and world number one the Springboks until the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks top their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

If the groups conclude according to the current global standings, further leading contenders like New Zealand and France would remain separated from both the English and the Irish all the way to the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies have been drawn together with their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to launch the competition.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are grouped with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in France.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Pool B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six group winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
